Railway Lighting
LED Lighting Solutions for Railway Applications
Reliable LED retrofit systems, obsolescence management and customised lighting solutions for rolling stock and railway maintenance facilities.
For purchasers, planners and design authorities
Key railway standards and testing areas at a glance
The applicable evidence depends on the product version, project and test report. The following requirements are particularly relevant for SUPERIS RAIL.
SUPERIS RAIL
Economically modernise existing luminaires
SUPERIS RAIL was developed for rolling stock and demanding on-board power supplies. T5 and T8 formats, different output levels and project-specific versions allow adaptation to existing luminaires.
- 24 V, 110 V and 230 V AC/DC
- Custom voltage ranges available on request
- T5 and T8 formats and custom lengths
- EMC-tested driver technology
- Suitable for 24-hour operation
- Optional tested cable set

SUPERIS RAIL Product Family
T5 and T8 railway LED tubes for existing lighting systems
Both formats belong to the SUPERIS RAIL product family and are described in one combined technical data sheet.

SUPERIS T5 RAIL
Compact railway LED tube for existing T5 lighting systems in rolling stock.
- G5 format
- Project-specific voltage and length selection
- For professional railway retrofit projects

SUPERIS T8 RAIL
High-performance railway LED tube for existing T8 lighting systems and demanding on-board power supplies.
- G13 format
- 24 V, 110 V, 230 V and project-specific versions
- Patented 320° light distribution

Voltage Solutions
Standard ranges and customised on-board power supplies
Not every fleet operates with a standard voltage. We therefore develop and supply LED tubes and drivers for individual voltage ranges and project-specific requirements.

Patented Light Distribution
Near-original lighting characteristics
The patented 320° light distribution creates an illumination pattern that closely replicates the characteristics of conventional fluorescent tubes. This ensures that existing luminaires maintain virtually the same light distribution, allowing a true 1:1 retrofit without compromising the original lighting performance.
Engineered for Railway Applications
Materials, thermal management and fire protection working together
SUPERIS RAIL was not developed from a conventional LED tube. Its design, components and electrical architecture have been specifically engineered to meet the demanding operating conditions found in railway vehicles.
320° Patented Light Distribution
The patented 320° light distribution preserves the illumination characteristics of existing railway luminaires by closely replicating the light distribution of conventional fluorescent tubes.
Reduced LED Operating Current
A larger number of LEDs are intentionally operated at a lower current. This significantly reduces thermal stress on each individual LED, resulting in lower operating temperatures, increased efficiency and extended service life.
Optimised Heat Dissipation
Aluminium end caps support efficient heat dissipation exactly where it is required. Thanks to the reduced operating current, only minimal heat is generated inside the glass tube, ensuring stable long-term performance.
Complete Product Certification
For railway applications, compliance is based on the complete product—not just the PCB. Every material and component contributes to the overall fire protection, mechanical durability and electrical performance of the finished product.
Key Benefits
Retrofitting Instead of Replacing Complete Luminaires
Installation & Certified Retrofit Cable Kit
Straightforward and Reliable Retrofit
The optional certified retrofit cable kit enables fast and straightforward installation, depending on the vehicle type and luminaire design. The installation method and electrical connection depend on the specific product version.
- Single-ended or double-ended power supply depending on the application
- Galvanically isolated tube ends
- Optional certified retrofit cable kit for bypassing the ballast section
- Project-specific installation instructions available

Testing & Quality
Transparent Documentation of Standards and Testing
The applicable standards and test reports depend on the specific product version, project requirements and certification scope. For SUPERIS RAIL, the following standards and test areas are particularly relevant:
| Test / Certification | Standard |
|---|---|
| Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) | DIN EN IEC 55016-2-3 |
| Electronic equipment used on rolling stock | DIN EN 50155 (VDE 0115-200):2022-06 |
| Shock and vibration testing | DIN EN 61373:2011-04 |
| Fire protection on railway vehicles | DIN EN 45545-2 |
| Surge Immunity Testing | DIN EN 61000-4-5 Availability Depending on Product Version |

Obsolescence Management
Preserve Proven Systems. Conserve Resources. Secure the Future.
Fluorescent tubes and many associated ballasts are no longer available as new products. At the same time, railway vehicles remain in service for several decades. Schmelter LED-Technology develops compatible LED tubes, luminaires and replacement solutions that modernise existing lighting systems with minimal retrofit effort while preserving proven installations wherever technically feasible.
Preserve Existing Luminaires
Continue using mechanically proven and approved lighting systems whenever technically appropriate.
Replace Obsolete Components
Redevelop discontinued products or replace obsolete components with technically compatible modern solutions.
Conserve Resources
Reduce material consumption, minimise waste and avoid unnecessary complete system replacements.
Support Approvals and Documentation
Provide technical documentation, installation instructions and project-specific evidence required for vehicle approval and implementation.
